Where Brotherhood Began at Home
Vandalia Lodge No. 290 | 42-Year Mason
Phillip L. Krallman was a dedicated Mason whose life exemplified service, compassion, and brotherhood. A 32nd Degree Mason and Shriner, he proudly served as Potentate of Saladin Shrine and devoted countless hours to helping others, especially children. One of his greatest joys was transporting young patients to Shriners Hospitals in Chicago and the Burns Hospital in Cincinnati, ensuring they received the care they needed.
Phillip was instrumental in establishing the Shrine Club in Union and its fundraising efforts. He was also a member of the Elkhart Shrine Club, where he enthusiastically drove the parade wagon in community parades and events. His Masonic involvement extended throughout many organizations, including the Scottish Rite, York Rite, Knights Templar, Royal Arch Masons, and the Order of the Eastern Star, which he joined alongside his wife, Joella.
A respected leader, Phillip served as Worshipful Master of Vandalia Lodge No. 290 on two occasions. During his second term, he and Joella worked together on numerous projects that supported the lodge and strengthened its financial stability. He took great pride in contributing to the success of his Masonic family and found immense satisfaction in serving others.
Phillip’s kindness extended far beyond lodge walls. He was a caring and generous man who quietly helped those in need, often without seeking recognition. On one occasion, his family discovered by chance that he had helped provide a memorable Christmas for a family struggling through difficult times.
His home was a gathering place for Masonic education and fellowship. In his finished basement, he welcomed new Masons as they studied and learned their degrees, hosted lodge meetings, and fostered the spirit of brotherhood. Joella fondly remembers preparing snacks and refreshments for these gatherings, which often lasted for hours as members shared knowledge and camaraderie.
Phillip faithfully attended annual Masonic meetings and actively participated in Shriners Imperial Sessions. He believed in showing up, supporting the organization, and doing his part whenever needed.
His devotion to Freemasonry, his family, and his community left a lasting impact on all who knew him. Though his passing left an immeasurable void in the hearts of Joella & all those who loved him, his legacy of service, leadership, and compassion continues to inspire.
