The Legacy of Believing in Others
Legacy is the enduring impact of a person’s life, values, and actions. It is the mark left behind for future generations, reflected in the beliefs they uphold, the lives they touch, and the example they set for others.
Ken Smiley’s legacy is one of service: service to his family, his community, and his Masonic family. A dedicated Freemason for 46 years, Ken was a proud member of Grand Blanc Lodge No. 571 and Lansing Lodge No. 33. The principles upon which Freemasonry is built were the same principles Ken demonstrated every day through his actions, character, and commitment to others.
His devotion to family was evident in every aspect of his life. Ken stood faithfully beside his wife, Marilee, as she served Job’s Daughters at the local, state, and international levels. He was equally devoted to supporting his children, Mark, Duane, and Sheila, as they pursued competitive swimming and became active in DeMolay and Job’s Daughters. Whether they were facing new challenges, striving toward ambitious goals, or accepting greater responsibilities, Ken was there, offering encouragement, guidance, and unwavering support. His love was unconditional, and his belief in his family never wavered.
That belief in young people extended far beyond his own family. Affectionately and respectfully known as “Dad” to many, Ken had a remarkable gift for seeing potential in others, often before they could see it in themselves. He encouraged young people to work hard, believe in their abilities, and pursue their goals with confidence. Along the way, he celebrated their successes, encouraged them through setbacks, and became a trusted mentor and friend to countless individuals.
Ken’s dedication to youth organizations was extensive and impactful. He served DeMolay and Job’s Daughters at the local level and went on to hold significant leadership positions as Associate Grand Guardian for Michigan Job’s Daughters and Associate Supreme Guardian at the international level. His commitment to service extended beyond youth programs as well. For 15 years, he served on the Pathways Board, bringing wisdom, experience, and thoughtful leadership to the organization.
Professionally, Ken served as Assistant Auditor General for the State of Michigan. His expertise in finance and governance provided valuable insight to the organizations he supported. He understood that sound financial stewardship plays a critical role in an organization’s ability to fulfill its mission and serve its members effectively. His counsel was respected, his judgment was trusted, and his contributions had a lasting impact.
When people remember Ken Smiley, they remember a man who never sat on the sidelines. They remember a man fully engaged in the lives of others, always ready to serve, encourage, and support. He lived with kindness, compassion, integrity, and a wonderful sense of humor. Through his dedication to family, his guidance of young people, his leadership within Freemasonry, and his unwavering commitment to service, Ken built a legacy that will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.
