Past Grand Master Ira Slaven of Solomon’s Key Lodge No. 580 was a devoted Mason whose life exemplified service, leadership, and dedication to others. A Brother of 58 years, Ira left an enduring mark on Freemasonry and on all who had the privilege of knowing him.
One story captures Ira’s passion for sharing the values of the fraternity. In 2019, while shopping at Sam’s Club, Ira struck up a conversation with a young couple who had twins, just as he and his wife had raised twins of their own. As the conversation continued, Ira gave the husband his business card. Looking at the card, the man asked, “What are the Masons all about?” Ira took the time to explain the principles and purpose of Freemasonry and encouraged him to think about it and give him a call. Years later, during Ira’s visitation, a gentleman approached the family and said, “You don’t know me, but your husband got me to become a Mason.” It was a simple but powerful testament to the influence Ira had on others and his commitment to the Craft.
Born on February 1, 1942, Ira was a lifelong resident of Taylor, Michigan. He is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Gayle, and their children.
Ira proudly served his country in the United States Air Force before embarking on a distinguished career with the Taylor Fire Department. Beginning as a firefighter, he later became a Fire Inspector, dedicating his professional life to protecting his community. His commitment to public service continued when he was elected to the Taylor City Council, becoming the oldest person ever elected to serve in Taylor’s 55-year history.
A dedicated 33rd Degree Mason, Ira was raised in Bethel Lodge No. 358 in Sault Ste. Marie in 1965 and later transferred to Golden Ark Lodge No. 595 in Taylor. Throughout his Masonic journey, he served as Lodge Secretary for many years, Worshipful Master in 1976, and ultimately as Grand Master of Michigan in 2007-2008. He was also active in the Shriners, the Order of the Eastern Star, and the Scottish Rite, where he held the distinguished title of Most Wise Master.
Ira Slaven’s legacy is one of service, integrity, fellowship, and leadership. His dedication to his family, community, country, and the fraternity will continue to inspire generations of Masons to come. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all whose lives he touched.
