The Strongest Man I Know
Garden City Lodge No. 587 | 48 Years of Active Masonry
It is my honor to pay tribute to my husband of 69 years, Ernest E. Abbott. Ernest was the proud father of 12 children and the beloved grandfather and great-grandfather of more than 100 descendants. Family was always at the center of his life, and he took an active role in raising and supporting each of his children.
His love and guidance extended far beyond his immediate family. Nieces, nephews, and even neighborhood children affectionately called him “Papaw” because he always made time for them. He was a devoted provider, a tireless worker, and a man whose strong work ethic began in childhood and remained with him throughout his life.
In July 2018, Ernest passed away after a courageous battle with mesothelioma, a lung disease caused by years of asbestos exposure while working at McLouth Steel. True to his character, he faced the disease with remarkable strength and determination, fighting bravely until the very end.
I vividly remember the pride he felt when he became a Mason. He dedicated countless hours to studying and striving to be the best Mason he could be. His commitment to the Craft was evident in everything he did. His children knew how much Masonry meant to him and often gave him Masonic-themed gifts at Christmas to honor his passion and dedication.
While Masonry was an important part of his life, Ernest was first and foremost a Christian man. He was deeply faithful, fiercely loyal, and devoted to those he loved. His kindness, integrity, and unwavering commitment to family, faith, and community left a lasting impact on everyone who knew him.
Ernest was truly an asset to this world. Though he is greatly missed, his legacy lives on through the many lives he touched and the family he cherished so deeply.
