A Mason’s Legacy Written Across Eight Generations
Charles “Charlie” Kniffen, a devoted family man, dedicated Mason, and passionate community leader, passed away at the age of 88, leaving behind a legacy of service, integrity, and commitment to others.
A resident of Oxford for more than 50 years, Charlie was deeply invested in the community he called home. Elected to the Oxford Township Board in November 2000, he faithfully served until November 2008. During his tenure, he contributed his leadership and expertise to numerous local organizations, including the Polly Ann Trailway Management Council, the Oxford Area Cable Communications Commission, where he served as chairperson, the Oxford Township Water and Sewer Committee, where he also served as chairperson, and the NoHaz Consortium. He played an instrumental role in overseeing the construction of Oxford Township’s two fire stations and the township hall on Dunlap Road.
An electrician by trade, Charlie brought the same strong work ethic and attention to detail to his profession, his community involvement, and his family life. He and his beloved wife, Barbara, shared nearly 53 years of marriage, building a loving family that grew to include five children, 14 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
Charlie was also a proud Mason for 66 years. Initiated through Palmer Lodge No. 560 and through subsequent lodge consolidations, becoming affiliated with Ancient Craft Lodge No. 551 and Ortonville Lodge No. 339, he remained actively involved in Blue Lodge Masonry throughout his life, particularly after his children had finished school. His commitment to the fraternity extended across generations. Two of his sons and one grandson followed in his footsteps to become Masons. As a fifth-generation Mason himself, Charlie took great pride in seeing the family’s Masonic heritage continue and grow to eight generations at the time of his passing.
Whether serving his township, supporting his lodge, mentoring future generations, or caring for his family, Charlie exemplified the values of service, leadership, and brotherly love. His contributions to his community and the Masonic fraternity will be remembered with gratitude, and his legacy will continue through the many lives he touched.
Charles Kniffen’s life was a testament to the power of dedication, family, and community. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.
