The Man Who Opened the Door
Alma Lodge No. 244 | 71 Years of Masonic Service
Brother Leo Cohoon was a remarkable Mason, mentor, and friend whose kindness touched many lives.
Leo and his wife, Rose, took my parents under their wings when my father was a student at Central Michigan University, graduating in 1957, and my mother was teaching business at Shepherd High School. We all attended the old Church of Christ on Orchard Street, and I have many fond memories of Sunday dinners shared with Leo, Rose, and their sons, Eric and Brian, both outstanding Boy Scouts.
My father found a true friend in Brother Leo. When he asked the question that so many Masons before him have asked, Leo became his mentor and guide in Freemasonry. Years later, when I was initiated as an Entered Apprentice Mason in Big Rapids, it was a special joy to have Leo present and taking part in the ceremony.
Brother Leo’s influence extended far beyond his own lodge. His example of friendship, service, and dedication to the Craft inspired generations of Masons. Today, as Organist of Bethel Lodge No. 358, I remain grateful for the impact he had on my life and on the lives of so many others.
