The Friends That Were Found Along the Way
58 Years of Masonic Service
My husband, Bill, and I, along with our young son, moved to Michigan on Labor Day weekend in 1960. We were recent college graduates, just beginning our careers and building a new life together. In 1963, Bill joined Malta Lodge in Grand Rapids as a way to meet people and establish friendships in our new community. As many know, coworkers do not always become close social friends, but through Masonry, we found a welcoming and lasting family.
In 1965, Bill joined the Scottish Rite and thoroughly enjoyed participating in the many degrees, programs, and activities of both the Blue Lodge and the Scottish Rite. His dedication to Masonry led him to become an officer in Malta Lodge, eventually serving as Senior Warden. A career transfer to Chicago temporarily interrupted his Masonic journey, but after a six- or seven-year hiatus, he resumed his service, once again serving as Senior Warden before becoming Worshipful Master of Malta Lodge in 1983.
Bill’s commitment to the fraternity continued through the Scottish Rite, where he advanced through the Lodge of Perfection and ultimately served as Thrice Potent Master. In recognition of his dedication and service, he was elected a 33rd Degree Mason in 2000.
Did we make friends through Masonry? Absolutely. We formed lasting friendships with wonderful people from all across Michigan. Together, we shared countless enjoyable experiences, whether working side by side in support of Masonic endeavors or simply enjoying each other’s company.
Sadly, Bill and many of those dear friends have now passed on. However, I remain grateful for the cherished memories, friendships, and experiences that Masonry brought into our lives. Those memories continue to be a source of comfort and joy.
