Honoring Bro. Mervyn Maxwell

Strength That Inspired, Love That Endured

Mervyn “Merv” Maxwell was the love of my life and my devoted husband for 62 wonderful years. A cancer survivor, Merv faced tremendous adversity with courage and determination after losing his right arm at the age of 17. His strength, resilience, and positive spirit were an inspiration to all who knew him.

Merv was a proud member of the Masonic family for 61 years and a dedicated member of Mt. Moriah Lodge No. 226. Masonry was an important part of our family for generations. His father, George Maxwell, was a lifelong Mason, as was my father, Harold Phipps. Together, these three remarkable men upheld the values and traditions of Michigan Masonry throughout their lives.

The Masonic tradition continues through our son, Mark Maxwell, who has been an active Mason for more than 20 years. My mother, Beatrice Phipps, was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, and I have fond memories of attending Masonic events throughout my life. The values of faith, service, family, and fellowship have remained a constant thread connecting generations of our family.

Today, I am a widow living in Florida, while Mark and his family reside on Bainbridge Island, Washington. Though life moves on, Merv’s memory, love, and legacy remain forever in our hearts.
