In Loving Memory of Richard H. “Dick” Sands, 33° Scottish Rite Mason & Past Grand Master of Michigan F. & A.M.
Richard H. “Dick” Sands (1929–2024) dedicated more than 50 years of his life to Freemasonry, leaving a lasting legacy of leadership, education, and service. An educator by profession, Dick brought his lifelong passion for teaching into every aspect of his Masonic journey. He was the author of the Michigan Masonic Manual and faithfully revised and updated it throughout the years, ensuring it remained a valuable resource for generations of Michigan Masons.
Dick served as Grand Master of Michigan in 1985 and remained devoted to his home lodges—Ann Arbor Lodge No. 262 and Milford Lodge No. 165—throughout his Masonic career. His influence on Michigan Masonry was profound, and his commitment to the Craft never wavered.
Dick and I were married in 1998 and were blessed to share many wonderful years together in retirement. We traveled extensively, exploring Alaska, New Zealand, Australia, and Europe. We cherished our seasonal lifestyle, spending winters along the coast of South Carolina and summers in Michigan.
Above all, Dick was devoted to his family. He found great joy in the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing. Among his favorite places was his deer hunting property in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, where he spent many memorable days enjoying nature.
Dick is missed every day, but we are deeply grateful for the 94 years he shared with all of us. His wisdom, kindness, dedication, and love will continue to inspire those whose lives he touched.
